Your mobile phone at TGS

If you visit The Great Swamp, you should be aware of the lack of any cellular network whatsoever around here. That is right, you will get no signal at all in the entire valley with a regular mobile phone. But that does not mean that smartphones are completely useless around here. The camp does provide Wifi for visitors though bandwidth is rather limited and it is only available during daytime hours. This is possible thanks to our satellite uplink. But even outside the camp your phone can be used to take pictures, or get your location with GPS. Unless you go too far East where, for reasons our researchers have yet to determine, no GPS signal comes through. Of course without internet connectivity you will be unable to download any maps, so I recommend that you make sure that you have everything downloaded and ready for offline use before your arrival. A mobile can also be usefel as a flashlight or to simply take notes or write posts like I am doing here. But, of course, I can only upload them when I am back at the camp. Another recommendation I have for you is to bring a device with high screen brightness and good contrast. The sun is quite intense here and it can be next to impossible to read anything outdoors on a cheap display.

And one last piece advice: Be mindful of your surroundings at all times. There are many dangers out there in the swamp and you should not let yourself get distracted by your mobile device. So, uh… am I… nghh… getting deeper… uh-oh… Quicksand!
