Elizabeth seemed cheerful at first. I think the fact that most of the challengers before her had failed,
took away a lot of pressure. She told me, that she would be content just to reach the pit’s center.

But on the very first step, her foot got stuck and she lost her balance. Elizabeth managed to break her fall with her hands which immediately entered the quicksand to the elbows. Then she freed them and tried to move on, but she had already lost plenty of time and her legs had been claimed by the quicksand. Still she struggled on for a while, but by the time the girl was chest-deep in the quicksand there was no way she would even make it to the pit’s center. That is when she finally resigned.
